ML museum liaunig | Austria | querkraft

task
a musuem for herbert liaunigs comprehensive private collection. remote from urban centres the museum should be a magnet for people and allow for contemplative appreciation of art. correspondingly there was a budget framework and minimal operating cost were requested by the client.

response

due to cost and the optimisation of the energy concept, 95% of the volume of the building is underground level; the excavated earth was distributed around the building site. the visitor enters through the large visible storeroom, the "wine-celler of art" and then arrives at the central main hall. as a polar opposite to artist comtemplation the visitor is confronted with the dramatic landscape through a large 'picture window'. the visitor never gets the impression that he is underground...........more
