HOUSE OF THE GREAT LAKES MORVAN,France | Buildingbuilding

MOU: Communauté de communes des grands lacs du Morvan

Associate: Berger & Berger

Engineer: GMGB

Landscape: Cao Perrot Studio

Site: Lake Settons (58)

Settons Lake, the dam and the nearby woods are the unique site of the Maison des Grands Lacs du Morvan and the strength of this place. Our intention is to produce an architectural and landscape context, without ostentation, which will not attempt to return to competition with this landscape.
It will deal with the environmental requirement of the House Great Lakes and its annexes. Without considering the entire hierarchy of existing buildings as an architectural vernacular that needs to be strengthened climate (heat sealing), not folklore or nostalgia. This is considered as existing buildings architectures containing all programs, extended across the landscape and climate in an exchange with it.
The house keeping done in the nineteenth century housed initially in charge of construction of the dam. The building that will house a new program consisting primarily of offices will not need to be modified in its structure but in its relation to the environment.
This will improve the thermal qualities of the House Great Lakes and annexes without heavy modifications: isolation of a casing made of natural elements and change existing windows with windows equipped with double glazing. The house keeping and appendices will be treated to meet the requirements of economy of energy consumption of 120kWh / m² / year.
The extension that we create buildings envelope B (health) and D (catering and meeting). The location will house the home of the office of tourism, exhibitions and various cultural events. This "between" is a gallery preheated, a "buffer" thermal host the public. This space is an ambiguous inner landscape which are subtracted few natural climatic qualities: the wind (glazing) and rain (roof). A natural environment "domesticated" preserved network of central heating and freed of artificial lighting. The rugged topography of its surface is maintained. This place is a territory between the rainforest and vernacular architectures artificially air-conditioned.
The paradox of contemporary green building is that they are all the more powerful they are "cut" of their environment, without exchange "chemicals" natural climate and with the territory. Our project meets both the needs of economy of consumption of fossil fuels and producing those open spaces to the landscape and environment in a report that exceeds that of a simple visual perception. Experiencing the landscape with its light, its temperature, by agreeing to the thermal fluctuations of the seasons, the natural cycle of light, the sunrise and sunset. Our project seeks to produce a multitude of environments and climatic qualities accepting new environmental rules of contemporary buildings. Produce alternative spaces "no standards" in less controlled environments.
Our desire is to produce quality space in the absence of singular comfort modern standard. Space climate and topography unstable. We argue that alternatives are possible to the homogeneity of modern climate to revive a more sensual and less "upset" with the territory.
The tourist office is not the symbolic representation of a landscape or region, but the physical presentation thereof through the sensuality of the community. A program which uses are seasonal and can therefore accept the impermanence of the atmosphere inside.
Our project is not creating a versatile space but a space through which users will migrate with the seasons and weather fluctuations. Our intervention will tend to "do with" while producing areas "beyond the physical boundaries of existing buildings.
The house near the Great Lakes with Annexes "reconditioned" create a landscape less "savage" and "domestic" in the garden. If in nature, nothing is fixed, everything is changing, the landscape remains incomplete, impermanent, imperfect. Our landscaping project for the Home Great Lakes is part of this culture and the aesthetic. From an impoverished nature, we aspire to create a nature deconsecrated without apparent pretensions, the art landscape non-intentional.
The environment tends to naturalization well by nothing but a summary. Afforestation area reflect the landscape of the Morvan. The exceptional natural and built elements (buildings, walls and terraces) are almost obvious harmonies (distribution, shapes, volumes). Rather than import a landscaping project on the site, we want to promote this heritage landscape and vegetation.
By promoting the dynamics of nature - the natural processes (sun, humidity, rain, wind, hot and cold) - they reveal their inherent beauty and cause a new diversification of the environment (biotope and biological). Without ornamental value, strictly speaking, the garden has no boundary and blends into its surrounding landscape. The interactions between plants create a new balance and new dynamics of fauna and flora.
