This lozenge-shaped building creates a gateway and focal point for the university campus. Extremely compact and flexible, the building houses a 1,000-seat theatre divisible into two 500-seat lecture halls, or retracts to host an exhibition. Flexibility does not mean anonymity - the building is carefully sited, and connected by an axial route and stairway with a grand portico framing a vista to a beautiful lake....Patel Taylor

Won in competition, the concept was twofold - to frame Bellmouth Passage and to make a seamless connection of the public realm. A third opportunity was the celebration of a threshold over water. The two bridges are cantilevered from a single pivot, heated and cooled, and required a complex engineering solution to take them from concept to reality.
