It is to be seen a widely spreading switchyard on the same direction of the elevated road. The vicinity of the site is an eclectic gathering from small to medium size of factories, warehouses, trade facilities and housings forming which is the mixed landscape of architectural typologies.....more

It is to be seen a widely spreading switchyard on the same direction of the elevated road. The vicinity of the site is an eclectic gathering from small to medium size of factories, warehouses, trade facilities and housings forming which is the mixed landscape of architectural typologies.
The client is a company holder who is running an experiment about the safety of medicine by planning and developing tools and equipment for medical purposes. The requested program was about the reconstruction of the factory by giving two different options. Firstly, the completion of the existing part of the building and then the construction of the whole part of the program and design was expected.
The first floor is divided into conference room, reception office management office and warehouse. On the second and the third floors, there are gathering functional spaces like a production spaces as the fabrication department and development department which are vertically joined as a "rift" system that break the frontier between the two floors. The fourth floor was allotted to the one room with a large meeting space which can be responded to the office for design research and the development and various seminars and meetings.
The building body is covered with a delicate membrane constituted of aluminum louvers in order to avoid showing the disgusting clustered pipes. Concerning the maintenance ease, the louver aperture ratio and the space behind those offer a proper access to the pipes system.
The reconstruction was also an experimental way to reduce as much as possible the impact on the neighborhood of the intimidating volume of the uninteresting factory......more

COLL-BARREU ARQUITECTOS | Software and biotechnology plants

Built |2007 | Derio | The Technology Park is a center of high technology industries turns 25 in 2010. For guidelines last phase of industrial growth decided to build two new buildings for research and production, respectively, computing and biotechnology. Both of them should work in complete independence, although the plan was considered in a unified way.
The model submitted to the competition proposed -with cedar, ebony and lemongrass- two soft insertions, no rough edges, lacking rotunda geometry –they are not circles or ellipses, or ovals-, whose perimeters should not be crossed even for access.
Two compact buildings with a ductile envelope, as a mass of grass or a plant stem, which could have existed prior to the delineation of the road. The compactness and the façade of brushed planes allows to the eye of the moving beholder (the driver on the road, pedestrians on the sidewalks) to softly surround the objects.
The façade is a double ventilated skin that allows breath the building. It connects the interior and exterior and is capitalizing energy, climatic, hygienic and space for such an exchange.
The façade is actually a vertical space that accompanies its full height, and provides natural light to both sides of the outer skin. The space between the two membranes gives users a place of permanent relationship with the outside.
It is a façade for North mist. Its light is the mist light, without shadows. The light is here as a continuous and weak material. The buildings lose their boundaries and not hurt the light.
Each user will occupy the interior according to their needs. But the construction of the façade will remain, and with it the most accurate, longer lasting elements. It is exposed the concrete with its most naive and raw sincerity. Glass sun visors are fixed with untreated stainless steel plates. Construction is a "no preservatives" one.
The exterior glass, which supports a soft pencil handmade drawing, provides a very smooth one way look, and completely open on the contrary.....more

ARCA -Regler GmbH Tonisvorst, Germany | Anin Jeromin Fitilidis & Partner








The new building of the German company ARCA-Regler GmbH is situated along a former railway line amidst a residential topology, which bears the stamp of villages. It combines a production area of about 1600 sqm and an office area of about 500 sqm. The objective was to create a building - other than the usual industrial buildings with a mostly low-priced warehouse made of gas concrete - that is accepted in the (residential) neighborhood and at the same time emphasizes the company's identity through its formal language and ecological pretensions.

The required building floor of about 2100 sqm has been developed as two-story-high long building being molded out of the grassed area surrounding it. Like a wide belt the facade winds its way into the terrain. The front glass building houses the office premises whereas the metallic building behind accommodates the development and production rooms. A zone for staircase and sanitary facilities separates both building parts.

The facade of the management area is a double-skin where the outside glass skin with a printing degree of 55 % is designed to keep out solar radiation to a large extent. Since printing intensity varies and is the less at eye level, the office premises look extremely transparent and allow a good view outward. The zone behind the second glass skin is accessible and offers the employees all the year round a weatherproof zone for taking their breaks.

The demand of the building owner to use resource-saving energy sources for an industrial building is not self-evident at all. However, this new building is operated with regenerative energies, only. The entire cooling capacity and the largest fraction of heating capacity for the new building is supplied by a field of geothermal probes without the need of further energy expenses.

Fibreboard Factory-La Muella, Havana | Andreas Michelsen












The fibreboard factory is situated in Havana, Cuba by Havana Bay. The scheme is a response the current situation of post-soviet Cuba suffering under the US embargo, resulting in previously subsidised industries slowly dissolving. In the case of my project the fibreboard factory is interwoven into the derelict structures previously used for storing sugar.

The design of the factory takes into consideration the very limited resources available in Cuba. It adopts a makeshift way of constructing and converting the few present materials, like the way Cubans repair old classic American cars with available materials such as plywood and ship-paint.
