National Memorial To The Spitfire | Architectural Design Competition Winner | Nick Hancock Design Studio
The 36-year-old Australian, who worked for Richard Rogers Partnership before founding Nick Hancock Design, was chosen above hundreds of other entrants and from a shortlist of seven.His design features a polished steel Spitfire soaring 40m into the sky on the end of a metal “vapour trail”. It will be twice the height of the Angel of the North.The memorial will be built on the waterfront in Southampton where the Spitfire was designed and built.Hancock said he was “over the moon”, adding: “The Spitfire is a true reflection of British ingenuity and tenacity.”Squadron Leader Alan Jones, a member of the Spitfire Tribute Foundation which is behind the competition, said the winning design was picked for its “clean, elegant deign”.....more at record
